Can water get in these holes?

So I am preparing the engine for a big hose down and came across these holes. Do they need plugging?

Firstly if you take the starter motor out there are two potentially dangerous hole. One directly under the motor (it has a little pipe running into it) which looks like it goes straight into the gear box. The other is just above the hole where the starter motor cog goes into the stator housing.







I just can't image that it is good for water to go in these holes. But then I can't see why they are designed into the engine either. Any ideas?

Thanks for your reply. I have put the starter motor back in but there is still the hole underneath it (which surely can't be waterproof) and the hole above the starter. Looks like it goes through to the stator housing and I don't want water in there.

The two holes into the stator cover are plugged when the starter and the stator wires are installed. The lower hole is there to drain water out of the starter area, it just dumps out underneath the engine.

tkent02 of course! I tucked the stator wires under the stator coverto keep them out of the way and of course it leaves a hole. Doh! Ok I will take that one up.

As for the other one; that is good news. I haven't turned to engine over yet to know what it looks like underneath. I thought it went straight into the gear box.

Checked out your blog.
Go buy yourself a bunch of assorted Cleaning brushes, rubber gloves, and cardboard to keep splashes clean.
From the wording of the blog am thinking motor is out of frame already?
Find a really large plastic bin.
If you have any scrap metal around can you build a short simple motor stand?
Either way put the motor in oversize bin and spray down with your favorite non corrosive cleaner.
I prefer kerosine myself but anything that will break down grease and oil without eating the paint will do.
Let it soak and run down into bin and reapply to keep wet while letting sit for a couple of days.
Start scrubbing, will be a long and cumbersome process.
