Top End Gasket Set
I have to do the top end on my '79 GS1000 this winter. I'll be needing gaskets and O-rings from the base gasket up including valve seals and was wondering of this set from Z1 is good quality. I priced OEM stuff and they're a little pricey but I would really hate to have to do the job over. I really don't need the practice. The motors only got 40,000 original miles on it and has good compression, it's just using too much oil to due dried out valve seals as far as I can tell. I've got a new set of standard rings to go in and another head with the same mileage to rebuild. Mines got an old plug hole repair that looks like it needs redoing so I'm just going to replace the head while I'm at it. Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.

Spend the money on OEM gaskets is my advice. Sometimes you can get what you need off ebay for cheap.Ed

That set might be OK for most of the stuff, but the base gasket and the head gasket are quite insistent on requiring OEM gaskets.
Last time I put an engine together, I got one of those kits, then also got the OEM head and base gaskets.
The "kid" has been using the bike all summer, I have not gotten home to see how the engine held up.

Looks at Boulevard Suzuki's sale this Monday. Last year I bought all the oem stuff for my rebuild at over $50 off. I just bought an OEM set of rings for $50 from ebay so they're out there. Just for the record I did purchase that exact kit for my old 850. I sold the bike a few months later, saw it over a year later and things were still holding together but I've just read too many threads about leaks to chance it again.Rob

Thanks guys! If I just get OEM base and head gasket are the O-rings in the kit OK or should I just bite the bullet and order all OEM. If I shouldn't use the O-rings then the only other gasket I really need from the kit is for the clutch cover. I have a rattley clutch to fix at some point too. I've got spares of most others already. The rubber bits are the cheap parts, you might as well go OEM. Apparently Boulevard will be continuing their Post thanksgiving sale on the 26th, midnight to midnight of all Suzuki parts, OEM and aftermarket. Their facebook page also says they are having a Black Friday sale which is for everything in the store, unlike the other sale which is online and in store and just for Suzuki. At least this is what I seem to understand about it all.Rob

Be aware of a head gasket change The later head gasket will probably not require the big square O ring for the head gasket. The revised gasket covers the O ring grove and does not use the O ring

The black Friday sale will probably be for in store items only, maybe, no one can tell really until Friday. But the sale you want is the one on Monday, the 26th. That sale is for Suzuki parts only and will include online sales. It's a bit more complicated for us Canadians, they're happy to ship International but you can't use the checkout online. You have to phone them or email them with your order, then they email you back with the costs. I just phone them. Do what you're doing, make a list with parts numbers and then you can call them and either tell them or email them the list. The sale starts Monday morning at 0001 and goes till 2400. And we won't know the extent of the discounts until then. I'm hoping they're as good as last year. 'SqDancerLynn1' has a good point about the newer head gasket but I have no clue how you can tell what you are going to get, guess you'll have to ask the shop.Rob

OK I'm confused as usual. The on-line parts diagrams list the same part number for the '78/'79/'80 GS1000 head gasket. (11141-49002 subbing to 11141-49410) The '80 gasket however is different, it has the extra bolt hole at the front of the cam chain opening. I'm assuming it's alright just to trim that piece off or are there any other differences. eBay is your friend here.
