750 gear in 1000 oil pump?

Hey fellas, the engine in my Cooley is getting ready to be rebuilt (here's the resto thread: http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...54#post1781154), and I have a question regarding the oil pump.

A couple of knowledgeable friends recommended installing a GS750 gear instead of the stock one to speed up the pump and increase oil pressure & flow.

What's the assembled wisdom on this? My non-engineer brain thinks that any time you increase the work load on any given part, it might create problems elsewhere. Also anecdotally, the GS1000 isn't really known for oiling related failures, is it, so why increase oil pressure??

If it does make sense to make this mod, is this the part I should get?

    thx,

hi GSJIM, yes it is a common mod on the GS1K's. it doesn't increase the actual pressure much but the volume of oil flowing through the engine. it is a good idea to make sure oil seals and gaskets are in good shape but as you are rebuilding the engine i guess they will all be new anyway.
that is the correct gear for the oil pump but you will also need the 750 gear that locates on the back of the clutch to drive the pump.
these "sets" are commonly available on ebay or put up a thread in the wanted section.

Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

      That's a 33 tooth gear.

The part number you're looking for on the pump side is 16331-45000 (29 teeth) and on the driven side 16321-45002 (38 teeth). The only reason I know is that I just went through the same thing for those gears.

They are both still in the Suzuki inventory, but are more than dear in price.

I had a response from a board member in minutes after posting a want ad.

Correct - more flow is good, aids cooling especially of you have an oil cooler

750 gears are a common performance upgrade

Ok thank you all for the feedback, that's what I need to know. Agemax, yep - all the oil seals are being replaced with new OEM ones. I tried to do an engine rebuild on the cheap last fall, and that turned out to be a disaster, hence the new rebuild. This time I'm doing it right and hopefully will have an engine that will last a good many years.

6pk many thanks for listing those part numbers, much appreciated!!
