1979 Gs 550L clutch replacement
Ive been trying for a while now to replace my clutch cable on my 79 gs 550L but the screws on the cover keep stripping. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right nor the steps to replace it. Anyone have directions for replacing it?Tags: None

Hi,
I bet you'll find the procedure in the service manual.
Are the heads of the bolts stripping or the threads?
Thank you for your indulgence,

As tkent02 says, a hand impact driver is the way to go. Something like this, which is the one I bought:

Before getting this tool, I WAS able to get the screws off of that cover using some woodworkers bar clamps and a pair of channel lock pliers. I clamped through to the other side of the engine and used the clamp to keep the screwdriver head from pulling away from the screw, and then turning the screw driver with the channel locks. It was annoying, but it worked.
I got the impact driver to get the cover off of the other side of the engine, and couldn't believe how easy it was.
The biggest cause of the problem is that you most likely have Phillips screw drivers, and these are actually JIS screws. I had never heard of JIS before I got this bike:

Hi,

Use an impact driver on the cheesy philips head (JIS) bolts. Then replace them with a set of hex head fasteners. Get the kit from Z1Enterprises.com.
