    81 750E Sprocket Spacer / 530 Conversion

    I am in the process of converting my 630 chain to 530. I have the correct replacement sprockets and now this leads to the multi-subject posts of the spacer thickness. As most of you know the original countershaft sprocket came with cushions, the total width of this configuration on the shaft is .790 approx. My replacement countershaft sprocket from JT is .220, a difference of .570 in. Most of the posts I've read call for a 6mm spacer on the nut side, but this gap I have is more closer to 12mm. Am I missing anything or does the math speak for itself?

          I did the 530 conversion on my 80 GS750E the 6mm spacer does go to the nut side. This is the order-- sprocket, 6mm spacer and the nut w/locking #43 washer. I bought a couple 1.25 mm spacers for inside the sprocket just in case, though didn't need them. It all aligns up nicely.

          Stuff I've done to my bike:dancing: 1100E front end with new Sonic springs, 1100E swing arm conversion with new Progressive shocks installed, 530 sprockets/chain conversion, new SS brake lines, new brake pads. New SS fasteners through out. Rebuilt carbs, new EBC clutch springs and horn installed. New paint. Motor runs strong.

            When you get done you should confirm your chain is reasonably well aligned. An easy way to do this is to put a straight edge against your tire (below the sprocket) and compare it to the chain(assuming the tire and wheel are not too warped). They should be parallel as show in the picture below. Generally you don't want to see more than the thickness on one of the link plates over the full length of the chain. You can add washers to get the alignment correct.

              81 GS750E Chain Swap

              Thanks for the info. I did find the culprit. I ordered and got a 530 chain, but found out my sprockets where for 520 chain . After doing a little more research I went with the JT 520 sprockets and just swapped the chain. I used the outboard half of the "damper" as my spacer. I trimmed the lip off of it flush to the body and it works just fine. Your alignment check was dead on. The sprocket combo if anyone else is interested is a JTF565/15 on the front and a JTR1825/41n the rear. This retained the original gearing of 2.773. Being that the motor is stock, the 520 chain is more than capable. Order the 120 link chain.
