Oil cooler bypass temp vs. pressure

From what I read in the manual the oil cooler is cut out of the circulation loop on the basis of an increase on oil pressure.
It then cuts back in when oil pressure drops.

If so this is a nice system as it assures proper oil pressure is maintained in contrast to a system that uses some sort of thermostat.
This is for 83-86 16v I4 550s

Interesting- but I'm unsure why this would be better than a thermostat that opens at some temp and lets hot oil flow thru cooler- assuming there is no pressure drop thru cooler.

If I read it correctly then there is no real concern for the viscosity rating of the oil in use.

Its an interesting point.
