    copper cylinder base gasket

    What are the thoughts on using a copper cylinder base gasket on a 78 gs 1000? I know we all agree that the OEM are the best as a paper/ fiber type , but I have never heard argument's for or against a copper one. Thoughts from the experienced please ?

    Copper is for race motors that come apart often. Ray.

      I use copper base gaskets on mine because with the heavy duty studs and 40-50lb torque, the paper ones get squished. Copper base gaskets are also made in several thinknesses from .005 to .020 or so to tune your deck height.
      Copper gaskets need a sealer put on them like gasgscinch or permatex.
      For a stock bike I would use a regular gasket.

        Is there a reason you wouldn't use one on a street bike? Are they more pron to leaks? or is it just a cost issue?

          They won't stay sealed over time in a street motor that doesn't come apart. Ray.

              I use copper and they do tend to leak a little.
              I'd use OEM on a stock motor.
              1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
              1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

                  I actually used gasgacinch and it weeps a little. I am totally happy with them. (copper head and base gaskets)

                    I'm surprised because I was under the impression that they would not leak with Gasgacinch. I must add that I have not used mine yet.
