Have you done a valve clearance check/adjustment? Out-of-spec clearances can cause hard starting. (And will eventually burn the valves!)

Eil, perhaps a valve adjustment will be the key. I think the motor sounds good and tight, but of course it certainly could not hurt to double check. I will get on that and report back to you with the details.
Cheers!

Same problem, same steps, different bike
I have a 82 GS750T with 21k mi. Was sitting for years, got running (carbs cleaned, battery, etc..), changed oil and filter, has same exact clutch problem as discribed in this thread. And that problem also goes away when at full operating temp. By that I mean ridden it on the freeway or surface streets for atleast 10 min or so. Noting that is a continuing problem even after replacing the clutch cable (new motionpro), filing the slight high spots on the outer basket, and replacing the clutch springs with new oem. Lever is in line with gasket surface. If I adjust the cable any tighter the clutch slips, badly. Yet when the bike is real hot from use there is more slack in the cable. before and after replacing the cable. So I am wondering if there is any further developments with pendac's clutch (when cold).

Did you use some steel whool on the fibers and steels to remove the glaze?
Did you measure the thickness of the fibers and steels?
