    Odd oil leak...

1982 GS650G ran great last summer. Put it under a tarp but outside this winter. I am leaking oil from the engine drain plug, and from the little rubber tube that descends from the bottom of the air-box behind the carbs!! Any chance I cracked the block? The bike started instantly.
    Thanks

    Greetings and Salutations!!

    Hi Mr. zanichbug,

Is the "engine drain plug" on the bottom of the oil pan? Are you talking about the oil drain plug? If so, it's possible that it's been stripped. The quick fix is to get a slightly oversized plug for it. The permanent fix is to get a new oil pan (I mean a good used one) or use a Time-Sert. Using a Heli-Coil is not usually recommended because the bolt is removed so often. This is what I did and it's been working fine for going on 3 years now.

Having some condensation in the airbox is usually not a big deal. Just clean it out. If, for example, the petcock has failed and allowed the crankcase oil to fill with gasoline then the engine pressure will tend to expel the excess fluid. Test your petcock. Make sure there is no gas in the oil and the crankcase is not over-filled.

Outside under a tarp ? check for mice overwintering in your airfilter box, while you check petcock operation. Remove oil cap - any smell of gas? if so, don't run it, correct the problem.
