Stuck and need some help with my final drive
Hey all. I'm going thru all the gliches on my 80 1000G after a top end rebuild and the frame up restore. My final drive was spraying gear oil on the tire a week or so ago, figured I had overfilled, which on second look appeared I had. Took some fluid out 'seemed' like that fixed it, I mean I went on a 60KM ride and there was nothing on the tire. Have ridden another 60KM and there is oil all over the tire and everywhere else...arrrrrrrr. Took the final drive off and put a wire thru what I 'believe is the vent hole and it appears open, I don't have any air around to blow thru it. I'm puzzled tho because there are 3 holes on the backside of the final drive. One at the top left has no thread and is smaller than the other 2. The other two, the top right and the bottom left are a bit larger and have thread! is there supposed to be something threaded into them? could that be what is causing gear oil to come out? if not, any suggestion what my problem is and how to fix it? I'm an hour from home, I'm not necessarily 'stuck' but I can't ride the bike home and would sure like to.

In case I have to swap out the final drive, will a 79 850 final drive properly fit the 1980 1000G? I used a straw and found the vent hole is clear, so that's not an issue.Rob

I just looked at my spare (off a 650); it has one non threaded hole at top- seems to be a vent. mine has the two threaded holes- I'd guess they are for fixturing reasons, helping to locate the rear plate to a fixture plate so precision machining could be done.
I'd suspect the big o-ring is leaking or maybe the oil seal on bearing itself. The thick 80/90 probably won't leak unless drive revolves.1981 gs650L

No, can't tell exactly where it's coming from, it doesn't leak when there's no pressure to it from ridingRob

I took the drive off and noticed the seal was actually at a bit of an angle, I tapped it in straight and all the way in and buttoned everything back together and test rode it. Still leaking but it seems to obviously be the seal. I'm heading home to sort thru my pile of parts as I know I have at least two other final drives, both from 79 GS850's. Hopefully one of those is ok, and hopefully they fit! the real frustrating thing is that this bike is my SHAFT, it's not supposed to do this to me!!
I'll update tomorrow when I go back to her and see what I can get fixed. Thanks for the help so far everyone.Rob

Rob, those '79 drives will fit your '80. Just make sure you use the same spacers from the '79, if different, when you swap finals.
The vent hole is just that, a vent. If the hole isn't plugged no pressure can build up so leak has to be coming from either the large o-ring sealing the two halves together, or the seal nearest the splines.
The threaded holes are used to separate the halves after all the bolts are removed. You screw a fastener in the (each) hole and it presses against the outer half forcing them apart.

o-ring? is that inside the final drive? the only thing I see is a very large seal near the spline.Rob
