I own a 1980 GS850L and last fall I drove the bike to work and home again with no issues( 30 miles total ), parked the bike in the shop no issues no funny noises nothing. Started the bike the next moring and when I just started to pull off( under load) I felt a little out of normal grinding/shutter feeling. I parked in the shop till I had time to look at it. may two days before I got a chance to look at it and I noticed my oil light just fickered if the bike was on its side stand, never noticed it before. so my thought was oil pump failing so I pulled off the valve cover and tons of oil getting to the top of the engine. next I thought It might be the timing chian because the one time I rode it down the road it made a grind/rattle sound when gasing it hard or letting off the gas. Check it and all is good there. I read something about clutch baskets causing a lot of trouble so I currently have my bike 100% disassembled to paint and do complete restore. My question is how much movement should I have in the basket with the plates and all out of it? I know this post is long but I wanted to explain eveything in detail because I am a pretty fair mechanic and can't find anything that is forsure the trouble maker.
Thanks
Jason
