i have not got an APE tensioner but i guess you should take the pressure off the tensioner, remove it, replace o ring with one the same size and refit. smear some grease round the new o ring before fitting. then reset the tensioner.
do not turn the engine over with the tensioner removed.1978 GS1085.
Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

the o ring is inside the tensioner I cant remove the set screw because it has the end on it that goes up against the chain and it don't come off.

There is an o-ring under the lock nut. It can be change without removing the tensioner.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.
