Will 850G engine fit 650G

The 850 is a full-sized engine. The 650 is a mid-sized engine. I have read that you can actually fit a 1000cc engine in the 850 frame, but I can't see any way you can get a larger engine in the 650 frame.
Also, since the 850 is the second heaviest Gs (only the GK is heavier) I can't see any reason why it would be desirable.
The 550 and 650 are both unique models, and very little is compatible with either larger or smaller GS models.

The '80 and '81 850G and 1000G have exactly the same part number for the frame.
Also, the '82 and '83 850G and 1100G have the same part number for the frame, but it's different than the earlier years.

Came close, a couple of years ago, too.

The 650 has practically the same hp as the 850 anyway, so why would you change to a heavier motor. 73hp compared to 77hp.

If you see an 850G and a 650G side-by-side, the answer is obvious. There's quite a size difference.
But how often does that opportunity come up?
All the 850, 1000, and 1100 shaftie engines interchange; the mounts are in identical places. You'll usually also need the carbs, airbox, usually the driveshaft, and possibly the ignition from the donor bike. I'm also thinking that G and GL airboxes may be different, so there may be issues to sort out there.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
