oil leak nightmare
On my 80 1100e I replaced the stator cover gasket as my boot was being water proofed from it. I used z1 enterprises amd they sent me a cometic gasket. Not its leaking 10 times worse to the point I don't wanna ride it. I'm tempted to use some permatex. Any suggestions?Tags: None

Sometimes aftermarket gaskets are not the same thickness as the stock gaskets, I learned this with my clutch cover gasket. Ordered a non stock made gasket off of ebay and it leaked. Ordered a stock gasket from Suzuki and no more leak. One more bit of advice, make sure the mounting surfaces are as clean as possible of the old gasket material and don't gouge surfaces. Check the stator cover mounting surface and make sure it is flat.
As for using permatex to seal the leak, in my opinion is a no. That has something to do with the oil jets/passages and the permatex some how getting into the oil stream and plugging one up.Needless to say what would happen then. Repair manual will tell you the two or three spots to use a bond. Stay with stock gaskets as much as possible. Though do want to say, I have ordered lots of parts from Z1 and they are an excellent company to do business with.Last edited by mrbill5491; 07-19-2013, 10:24 AM.sigpicMrBill Been a GSR member on and off since April 2002

Where exactly is the oil coming out of? Between the stator cover and the case? Or perhaps the infamous "mystery hole"? If it's the mystery hole the oil is coming from a completely different source. If that's the place it's coming from a forum search for "mystery hole" will get you pointed in the right direction towards fixing it.
If it is coming out between the stator cover and the case I concur with what Mr Bill has stated as there seems to be some kind of gasket quality difference between oem and aftermarket.
The other possibility is that the two mating surfaces were not completely clean. There could have been a tiny piece of crud left on one of the surfaces that has created a path for the oil to flow from. Or worse case, there may be a crack in your stator cover from which the oil is flowing.
You need to identify exactly where the oil is coming from. Clean it up real good and use a dye check in the oil or do it the old fashion way by dusting the area with corn starch, talc powder, etc.
Hope that helps and you find the source of the leak.

If you can get the old gasket off in one piece, you can use it as a template and cut a new one from gasket paper. Better auto parts stores sell some nice rubberized fiber type Felpro gasket material. Get the stuff that's of similar thickness to the original gasket (not sure of the thickness). Use scissors and a paper hole punch for the holes. Takes all of 10 mins. to make your own gasket so no need to wait.Ed
To measure is to know.

Another suspect spot is that rubber grommet the stator wires feed through - did you replace that old hard one when you installed the new gasket?'85 GS550L - SOLD

[QUOTE=hikermikem;1901783]My '81 1100E (same as yours) was leaking oil on that side last year & it turned out to be the starter O-ring - easy fix. The oil seeped into the starter cavity & ran out the mystery hole. Looked just like a stator case leak...

+1...same problem on my '82 750T. And the local hardware store will NOT have the right size O-ring...go ahead and order OEM DAMHIKsigpic

I used the new Permatex gas/oil proof gasket maker on my clutch cover and it hasn't leaked a drop.
Make sure it's really clean and go for it.

YOU NEED the gasket on the stator side. It provides some clearance for the starter gear. I would bet you did not get all of the old gasket off, done it myself..
