    left engine cover weld

Hey ive got a 82 1100 that has a busted left stator cover with some small cracks with oil leaking out around the screws. My friend offered to put a couple of welds on it to plug them up. Does anyone know what kind of metal those covers are made of or what kind of weld is needed?
    Thanks for your help,

they are made of cast aluminium and will need to be TIG welded.
engine covers can be hard to weld as they soak up oil in the pores and cause the weld to spatter.

a good welder should know how to tackle it and good results can be achieved.

Didn't see the cover, but you should be able to get good results if you completely clean the welding area using physical type cleaning, like grinding, sanding, chipping... the object is to get it down to virgin, clean base metal everywhere the tig torch is going to melt. Chemical cleaning will not do.

4043 filler alloy will work fine.

Actually, the type of metal depends on where you live.

Over there (where Agemax lives), it is aluminium.
Over here (where I live), it is aluminum.

Same process to weld either one, though.
