Before I remove my stator cover...

I need to remove my stator to strip the clear coat and polish it. Do I need to remove the case guard first?

Probably. The stator extends out into the small part of that cover, so you will need to pull it straight out until it clears. Plus it will make it much easier to get to the forward screws/bolts.

I didn't have to when I pulled mine to replace my stator.

I didn't have to remove mine BUT I did have to loosen and swing it out of the way.
