    1981 GS1100e - Engine whirring in tune with rev's

    My engine started whirring yesterday and got worse today.
    I read the following post,
    http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...hirring&page=3 , and I think it has to do with the the starter clutch but no where in the post does it state what makes the whirring noise.
    Is it the 3 loose hex bolts, a loose crank shaft bolt bad bearings. The engine is stronger then ever oil level is good and starts up OK.
    It also mentions that if you run the bike hard this will happen but the this part is not clear as to what gives up.

    Do you guys think it's just loose hex bolts and or crankshaft bolt.
    BlowrBike mentioned "Running a big GS up in the rev's or down shifting at hi rev's will blow your starter clutch a part."
    Is this due to the hex bolts or crank shaft bolt getting loose or that it somehow engages the starter clutch in the process?

    The tools I need are a impact wrench, a BikeMaster Flywheel Puller, a Mapp gas torch for the hub , ballpeen hammer?

    you have several pounds of spinning mass going in one direction and then it tries to change directions abruptly.
    all this happening on a small taper crank can spin the rotor or even snap the crank off at the main bearing....pieces slinging all around in the starter clutch whether large or small taper.
    i repeatedly told the people who paid me money to do work...
    not to down shift like a road racer and not to run it up to redline and slam the throttle closed...bad stuff happens on the left side of your engine.
    pull your complete rotor assembly.
    put your cover back on.
    bump start bike and see if the sound is still present.
    if it is then you are looking in the wrong area.
    a slightly twisted crank can make whirring sounds also but usually you have added vibes.

      Frack there goes another weekend.

      If you where to race this type of bike you would some how remove the starter and starter-clutch leaving the stator in place?

      Since I'vew hade the bike I've gone to the red line about 5 times. I even have the rev limiter at red line start. I did inadvertently down shift pretty hard a couple of times.

      Noob question. I have to empty the oil out to do this type of job right?

        No, just lean it to the right. I like to put the handlebar full lock left so it doesn't move once it's leaning against the work bench or wall. Adding a block under the right foot peg or frame keeps some of the weight off the handlebar. A little oil will come off the stator when the cover is removed so have a few rags.
        GS\'s since 1982: 55OMZ, 550ES, 750ET, (2) 1100ET\'s, 1100S, 1150ES. Current ride is an 83 Katana. Wifes bike is an 84 GS 1150ES

          no stator needed to race...just to charge battery.
          don't tell anybody but sometime's i lean the bike to the right and rest the handlebars(full lock to the left) against something solid...a wall ect..
          i have done this a lot as i hate messes and my handy lift usually is being used for a work bench or a crap gatherer..

              I removed the cover. Thanks you for the tip on leaning the bike
              Was not able to remove the nut even with an impact wrench.
              No metal shavings. All is tight as a virgin nothing is loose and the big starter gear rotates freely to the right and turns the shaft to the left. If you hold the gear and turn the crank left or right it stays put. I don't here any thing loose when turning the starter clutch.

              I know if I remove the starter clutch and push start the bike I'll know for sure.

              I'll be emailing the previous owner and ask him if he screwed around with it and most likely buy the torch and heat that nut.

              I have seen markings on the end of the crank shaft from a previous pull.

              Any comments?

                Since the last post the noise greatly diminished.
                Got the new starter clutch installed and it's still making the whirring noise.


                What should I be looking at next for the mystery whirring noise?
