    Cam Cover Bolts

    OK silly me. I didn't take a note of the positions of the different lengths of cam cover bolts on my GS1100G 1983.

    Can anyone help. There are a some longer ones. Where do they go?

    I don't have an answer for you but I'd check a parts schematic from one of the online parts suppliers, because as I recall they list the bolt lengths for replacement units. edit: I just two site and I was wrong..sorry.

      just put them in the holes and swap them round until all the lengths look correct before you screw em down. simples!
      1978 GS1085.

      Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

        Install all screws but don't screw them down. Look for any that are sticking up higher or lower than average and swap them around. Before you start threading in all the screws should be sticking up above the cover by roughly the same amount.

          any holes with dowl's take a longer bolt.
          take the VC and drop all the bolts in while holding the VC in the air..
          then look at the amount of threads sticking past the gasket surface.
          also pay attention to the dowl's i mentioned above.

            does the cam cover have dowels in it?
            1978 GS1085.

                Thanks guys. Sorted it out AND got her going:



                Damn - I still have the oil leak and no. 2 not heating up enough. Looks like the cam cover is coming off again. Some times you can get really fed up with these bikes!

                    No wonder it isn't running right Richard - every video you do starts with a beer (Badger First Gold today? that'll do..)....and then those pigeons started laughing....

                    Try swapping the plug on #2 - she could have fouled on start up. With the cam rubber leak, before you remove the cam cover try prying the rubber out with your thumb nail and putting it back in again - sometimes they just need a bit of fiddling like that to make them seat properly.
