help with gs700
I bought a gs700 not to long ago, got it started for a minute or two and after that, it wouldnt start anymore. Did a compression check, super low, like 70, 80 across the board, I think the valves are toast. My question is what engine can I swap the head out of in to my bottom end? Would a gs750 with square valve covers work or a gsx head?Tags: None

You realize of course that in order to perform a proper compression check the following are required:
- warm engine
- throttle held wide open
- valves adjusted within spec
- several hundred miles of good hard riding if the bike has sat in storage for a number of years
If the compression it truly bad, I'd focus on finding the same engine you already have - 3rd generation 750/700. Too much effort to transplant something else in there unless you get the engine for free or something and you enjoy a good project.Ed

As Nessiam said, most people do not keep throttle held wide open when they are doing the compression test (myself included when I first did it ).

I just got a spare engine for my bike, first thing I did was a compression check, over 150psi on 3 cylinders and less than 50psi on the fourth, checked valves, no gap on one so swapped shim out, now all four are over 150psi, I have just got to fit the engine now. Job for the winter as well as shotblasting the frame and powder coating it.
