    Exhaust cam stripped.

i found out why my tach isnt working. i didnt see it spinning with the engine, so i took the valve cover off and it confirmed my thought. the drive gear for the tach on the cam is stripped.

is there any magical fix for this or do I have to replace the whole cam?
if i have to replace the cam, any tips/shortcuts or things to watch out for?

Chuck were there not some issues arising from the use of the "real gasket" silicone replacement gaskets?

I thought the extra clearance caused the gears not to mesh and made them eat away at each other.

Use vice grips to clamp down on the cam like the factory manual shows before you attempt to remove the cam bearing caps. I'd put the engine at 1-4 TDC first, and set the lock screw on the cam chain tensioner.

What kind of engine are we talking about here?

Edit: the clamping down on the cams applies for the shim and bucket GS engines. Not sure about the rocker arm engines. Check your manual.

Dont know about that Jeep, but it makes sense seeing that you cant tighten the Real gaskets down fully or else they tend to squish and tear,

When replacing the valve cover I alway just lay the cover on top of the head and hold down lightly while bumping over the motor enough to see the end of the tach drive rotate. Then tighten down before anything moves further. Use oem or cosmetic gaskets and stay away from real gaskets. Gasket thickness is critical.
