    APE clutch hub nut?

I have a bone-stock 1100ez with no problems. I have been thinking about replacing the clutch hub nut with a an APE unit for precautionary measure. I like to ride quickly But not competitively. Is this worth it? Thanks.

Yes. It's only 15 bucks or so. Threads seem to stretch on stock ones.

      I use them.
Pull the clutch hub and spec the fibers and steels. I'd throw in some new clutch springs while it's apart.
Also inspect the back of the hub for loose springs and cracked rivets.
These helical clutches are known to grenade.

A GS1150 nut is a cheap alternative, and reputed to be stronger than the stock nut.

If you are going to hammer the bike on a regular basis it's advised to rebuild the clutch hub with a heavy duty back plate. Way more important than worrying about the nut.

torqueing over 50 lb/ft is what causes the nut to fail. stay close to the specs and mark with paint marker. it is easier to see if the nut is moving - they do loosen if you do not use the lock washer.

the APE camchain tensioner is also a great choice to improve.

            Replace the nut!! and More!

Use the APE nut for piece of mind. My 1982 GS-1100EZ made all the "usual" clutch noises. When I looked into this the stock nut was clearly loose, even with the lock washer properly installed. The stock soft nut threads had spread allowing the clutch basket to be quite loose! This may have led to additional loads on the clutch basket causing the springs in the basket to overally compress and stay that way! I had to replace the basket and springs with a MTC Engineering billet basket and backing plate...not cheap but again that was for piece of mind! I ended up replacing everything with new parts including a stock center basket. The stress cracks in the center basket were too many to ignore. After several years the clutch is working perfectly with no strange noises!!!
