clutch drag

I noticed my clutch was dragging so I pulled it apart for good measure. I couldn't find any plates sticking or any rough spots but when I went to put it back together I noticed this. I imagine this is from springs but is Ur indicative of another problem and should they definitely by changed? Is this causing the clutch to drag?

that is common but i would replace them.
i have never seen this cause clutch drag.

after market fibers/clutch pack.
to heavy of springs.
cheap cable that stretches when engaged.
chopped up basket and or inner hub.

heavy marks on the inner hub from the steel plate spline.
heavy marks on the basket fingers where the fiber plates ride.
1983 was on the only year suzuki used steel backed fiber plates...
this is bad...very bad because steel kicks aluminum's azz every time!
on the 1150 in 1984 suzuki went back to the 80-82 design fibers.
makes a person go hmmmmmmmmmm

Chopped up basket: the clutch fibers slide into the basket by lining up the ears of the fiber with the grooves on the basket. If the fiber backing is steel, and/or the bike is launched hard all the time, the ears will sort of dig into the grooves of the basket, inhibiting the sliding action needed to disengage the clutch when you pull the lever. The fibers will eventually get hung up in the "dents" and the clutch will seem like it never disengages all the way, drags really bad especially when cold, grabby, etc.

Inner hub: I think Blower means check to make sure the hub nut is tight and when it is tight that there is no play.

The hub on my 83 had the grooves blower bike described. I took a mill bastard file and smoothed them out. Greatly improved clutch feel and smoothness.

Pretty sure the piece in the pic is the spacer that goes inside the clutch spring. How the spring got into a position to eat into the side of it I don't know. Improperly reassembled?

nope nope and nope...
the spacers just get beat up...it happens.
i used to buy stainless spacers from?????
maybe ask big jay from APE.
i forget where i bought all mine from..
suncoast/paul gast/mre..ect...

the inner hub get chop marks from the steel plates over time.

Thanks for all the replies. I took a much closer look on reassembly and fortunately its not chopped up too bad and currently the fiber plates have lots of life left. I guess next time I pull it I will need to clean it up, replace spacers and maybe smooth marks on basket.
