GS650G crank material to re-tap crossed threaded mechanical advance mechanism.

I have a badly crossed thread hole in the end of the crank on right side that attaches the pick up coils and the mechanical advance. It is 8mm x 1.25 and I am wondering if I can drill it out to accept a 9mm X 1.25 instead. The problem is that I don't want to try this if the crank is too hard to drill and tap. So... what I would like to know is if the crank is "soft" enough to do this? What kind of steel is the crank made of etc? Can this be done without a complete tear down?

You may not need to helicoil it - that's a pretty deep threaded hole.
I'd run an 8 x 1.25 tap down the hole and see how much good thread you have left. You don't need more than about 10mm of good thread to hold the ignition trigger on.
