    Sprocket play

    Am looking at replacing the sprockets and chain on the 750 and noticed the sprocket, when in gear, moves alittle..like about 1 1/2 tooth worth of play...is this normal/ was looking at the manual on Cliffs website about gear play and checking with then gauge and all that.

    Whats a normal amount of movement at the sprocket? Dont think anythings wrong inside. No noise, clunks, or problems shifting up or down.

    I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

      Clicked it down to first to kinda help hold the nut for removal with the impact driver. I know theres gonna be a tad of wiggle room..but about a tooth worth seems a bit too much...yes?? Should I click it thru all gears and see what each does??

      Thought about looking at spline wear too after I originally posted. Hadnt gone back to the shop to take the sprocket off yet...looking for some things to check before i get too crazy..LOl

        Stop stressing ,if it aint broke dont fix it,it will just be clearances in the small diameter gears magnified by the diameter of the sprocket. Is it noisy when you ride? The drive thru the power train is directional so even if there is slightly more clearance than the ideal it wont hurt anything

          my front sprocket has some pretty significant movement.
          It would appear normal as it is the same across two engine I have had in the bike. one had 67000kms the other 35000kms but the slop was the same.

            Not noisy..other than the worn out chains hum,,which is readily recognizable. Just noticed the rotation and thought it was kinda odd.

              chuck its free play between the dogs on the gears, dont worry about it. Its normal.
              My bikes 79 GS1000 1085 checked and approved by stator the GSR mascot :eagerness: and 77 GS750 with 850 top end, GS850g, and my eldest sons 78 GS550, youngest sons GS125. Project bike 79 GS1000N

                Thought it wasnt anythingb to wrry about..but ask before tear it down is the way to go..
