I did some checking and the 95 Katana banjo fittings are 16mm and the 1150 cooler ports are 14mm.

Would be killer if I could find a cooler that had lines and everything and 14mm banjo fittings.

    Options:
    1. re-work the oil cooler lines to 14mm. (AN adapter, hose clamps, etc.)
    2. find something else with 14mm banjos.
    3. tap the engine out to 16mm ports.

What do you think? Or what would you suggest? Any other ideas?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Same question on a 1200 Bandit Cooler

Kevin, I have the same dilemma. I am building a 1428 big block on a 82 GS1100E and want to add a 89 Bandit 1200 Oil Cooler I have. The GSF1200 banjos are 16mm and the GS1100 oil threads are 12mm. I was thinking of drilling and tapping the case to 16mm also? Have you tried it yet or what did you end up doing? Thanks.

        mxm64,

I thought about tapping out the ports to 16mm, but didn't end up going that way. Instead I fabricated some adapters. Check out post my thread on the whole 1150 swap starting on post 60.

Before I did the final installation, I ended up grinding the welds flat so they look better, and so that I could fit them cleanly back into my mini lathe. I had to shorten them a little because they were bottoming out in the engine ports.

There was an unforeseen added benefit as the adapters ended up giving me a little more room to get the stock Katana cooler lines lined up. BTW, I bought the oil cooler with lines for $29 shipped from eBay.

Good luck, and let me know which way you go.

        -Kevin

          Very Nice Fab Kevin!

Very nice fab job Kevin! I have a mini-lathe too and was thinking of turning down something from scratch, but the threaded bolts and welded nuts it even better. Still, I think the there should be enough wall thickness on the case to drill out another 2mm and retap the case to 16mm? I need to check hose length/banjo fitment yet too before deciding which way to go. Thanks again for the idea.

Absolutely. I'm sure there's enough meat there. And then you'd have just a hair less restriction out the ports. Although I think the banjo bolt fittings are the most restrictive part of the circulation.

I didn't know if my efforts were going to work, I'm not an engine builder (I'm a banker) so I wanted to be able to reverse everything. That's a weak reason, but I also didn't have the whole block apart and didn't want to have to figure out how to remove all the tapping debris from inside the case. Which is another weak excuse, now that I think about it.

Anyway, they work. And the GSX600 oil cooler I have is way more than I need anyway.

You know that you need to either use an 1150 oil cover or plug the 1100 return to the filter, right?

                1150 Filter Cover

Yes, I have the 1150 filter cover and have a 1150 cooler, but want something bigger for my big block without air passages for the street. Thanks.

Schnikes! You're doing a 1428 for the street? Holy hell.
I better check out your thread.

                    Keeping her cool...

That is the plan. I have high speed oil pump gears (GS750), top end oiler and 1200 bandit oil cooler. Hopefully that will be enough. If not, maybe I will have to take up a new hobby.... (drag racing?)
