    Oil temp?

What's a good oil temp for an 1100EZ, top gear, steady cruise at 60 mph/4000 rpm for 7 miles, 50 degree outside temp?

      Temp accurate?

Does the '82 1100e oil temp gauge have a reputation for accuracy?

As far as accuracy that seems to be fine my 82 gs1100e has developed a problem, Once it gets up to operating temp acting normal and smooth. it wants to bounce around, swinging violently back and forth, steady a minute or two then jerks around up and down then starts bouncing again. I have traced to complete circuit (pink wire) for the gauge from the sending unit back up to the gauge, loose or damaged wires connections, grounds etc. I replaced the temp sending unit located behind the motor under the cam tensioner. Expensive waste of money, problem still exists. The only thing left I can think of is the temp meter itself. I have purchased a new/used 140 M.P.H. cluster w/temp gauge but have not installed it has any one else had this problem with these oil temp gauges. Thanks Mr.herky jerky

I have a 1983 GS1100E and my gage was doing the same and I did the same as you and changed the sending unit and like you that did not fix it so I changed the gage and that fixed it

Thanks I was believing I was chasing my tail for a little while here. Motor is down for winter freshening up, I'll know as soon as I install the new cluster assembly. I wonder how many other GS's have seen the same problem with the oil temp gauges over the years?

I already see an oil cooler in my 1100EZ's future.

The gauge goes to 320. At what temp is it wise to pull over and shut it down?

Are you running synthetic or dino oil?
Synthetic withstands high temps a lot better.

At about 240-250 Fahrenheit dino oil is wasted and all of the additives are gone. Change it ASAP. Synthetic will tolerate 270 for quite a while and will look like garbage at about 320 or just like dino oil at 240. It will even smell/look like dino oil at 320+. Garbage.

                      Dinosaur

                      I'm running Motul 10W40 Dino.

Although I believe that synthetic is better, I read somewhere that an older engine that never saw synthetic before should be kept on dino for the following reason: the synthetic is thinner, and may find leaks that the dino wouldn't. Any thoughts on that?

The horizontal line (nine o'clock) on the 1100EZ's temp gauge is about 230 degrees, no? The last mark, 320, is about 11 o'clock. So ten o'clock is time to pull over (and install cooler)?
