I haven't seen any clutches falling apart like that. Ever.

Getting the whole basket rebuilt is common on the big GSes, not that expensive. It will be far better then new afterwards.

I bet that one may be too wasted to rebuild.

I'd be real worried about how far into the engine and especially the transmission the swarf went. Splitting the cases to clean it all out might not be a bad idea.

When my starter clutch chewed on my crankshaft I picked up a bunch of that metal in the oil filter. I also filled up the crank case with mineral spirits and flushed it out. I hope I got most of it.

My worry would be the transmission, it is swimming in unfiltered oil, it may have ran a long time like that with metal bits chewing away on everything in there. Worth a look inside I would think.

Could those rivets be welded in place in order to save this clutch basket?

They weld the baskets back together when they rebuild them, or maybe they weld the rivets, not sure.. Probaby you need to see how bad yours is before guessing about it. I would think with all that movement the gear teeth would be worn out, the steel backing plate may be in sad shape? Donno, take it apart and see.

I think APE does them, one guy from there is on this site, ask him about it.

I'll cross my fingers! When I get home tomorrow I'll take it apart and make another movie

A 1-1/4" socket works fine in removing the clutch hub nut.

Update! I pulled the clutch basket (which looks VERY similar to the APE welded baskets) only to have 2 rivets fall to the floor as I removed it! Should I look into getting this welded again, or just new rivets? The teeth aren't damaged in any way, so I hope I can save this!

That does not appear to be the thin backing plate. However the installation job of the heavy duty backing plate kit was faulty. Send the assembly to Pearson for inspection and repair. Tell John that Dar sent you. The parts may be reusable. The grooves worn on the plate are probably from hitting the shaft on the oil pump. If so the pump should be inspected also. Dar

Sorry for the potential stupidity in asking this question, but while my clutch basket is getting welded up again, can I idle the bike, in neutral (filled with oil of course) without the clutch basket in order to fine tune these new carbs?

No do not run the motor! You will not have any oil pressure. The clutch basket turns the oil pump.
