I have a habit of buying parts and then waiting for a nice warm day to do the job. Well in January I got a Barnett friction plate kit, spring set and cover gasket. Today 2 months later I'm working on it, the kit has 9 plates. I now know that my 83GS1100E has 10 friction plates and 11 steel plates. The guys at Partzilla were no help at all. Can't return the kit so now I'm looking for 1 additional plate to complete the kit I have apparently it's a G model kit. The plates look right only 1 less than needed.

Well it's to bad you spent the money on that Barnett clutch, yes they work good , grab good and all but the plates are so thin where they meet your clutch basket they are going to cut into your basket and make the clutch hang. Thus ruining you clutch basket. If you look at the plate thickness compared to the stock one you will see just what I am talking about. Generally you can get by with just new springs on a stock clutch, they came from the factory with a pretty decent clutch.

Well, Barnett responded tonight, Saturday night. Wow. they state that the G model plates are thicker than the E model's plates. So the kit I have now is for sale. My basket already has a lot of wear spots from the friction plates. the drive basket from the steels also. I cleaned everything up, the steels had some rust. installed the new springs, the old friction plates looked ok. Road tested ok this afternoon. It's has some shuttering while starting off but not to bad. The only problem now is I have a new set of clutch plates that don't fit my bike and I can't return them.

Ok, Mike @ Barnett advised this; My 83GS11E has 10 friction plates-2.25mm thick plus 11 steels-2.0 mm total clutch pack 44.5mm thick..... The G model has 9 friction plates 3.0mm - 9 steels 2.0mm with a total of 45.0mm thickness. Now this is what mike said I should do, use my 9 G model friction plates and 9 of my 11 steels with a total pack thickness of 45.0mm. Will this work?

im no expeert on clutches but if mike at barnett advised he would know what to do. but if it fits i dont see why not.

It's been 5 weeks but I finally got around to doing what Mike @ Barnett told me to do. Set up my 83GS1100E clutch with the thicker G model friction plates and removed 2 of my 11 steel plates. Everything worked fine a lot less shuttering when taking off. I had no idea.
