gs1000 bent crank?
I'm reassembling this engine I picked up and while lowering the barrels into place I see now that the number 1 and 4 pistons do not reach TDC at the same time. 1 is first and 4 is a few degrees later. All I can think is bent crank.Tags: None

NOT bent it the crank spins freely in the cases. Out of phase or twisted would be the correct problem. Some came that far out from the factory. Only TRUE fix is to send it to a crank builder that SPECIALIZES in roller bearing cranks. 3 choices: John Pearson at Pearson Racing in Ohio, Stan Gardner at Gardner Racing Cranks in Maine, or Bob Mosher at Accurate Crankshaft in Florida. There is a reason I don't recommend Falicon. Best bet for HONESTY is the 3 I recommended. Ray.

How common is this? My 1980 GS1000G is just a little buzzy and I was concerned that it was out of phase as well. Haven't dug into much. Just noticed that I feel more vibration then I do on my 850.http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

annadel!
thanks
Out of phase is the problem. I had it running and it had a bad vibration, it also had low and uneven compression. Too bad, the thing has very low miles, it came out of a crashed bike w/5000 miles on it. Looks new inside, so much for that!

If that does not fix your vibration, pull the spark plugs from #1 aand #4. Use a pencil or other slender object to follow the movement of the pistons. By slowly rotating the crank, you will easily see if they get to TDC at the same time.
