    Almost Disaster

It was time for a rear tire on wifey's bike, so I yanked off the rear wheel, ( what a production THAT was!), and this is what I found. Never mind the gross looking grease, check out bolt holding the spline unit on....

New tire has now been installed, new bolt installed, all bolts tightened up and locked, old grease removed, and Honda Moly60 paste used on the splines.

If you post the [img] code here in the body of your post the image will show up.

BTW, what kind of grease are you using? That brown stuff doesn't look like Honda Moly 60. Is it similar?

I have no idea what THAT grease is, it was from the previous owner. Only had the bike less than a couple of years and only put a little over 8,000km, (5,000mi), on it. This was the first time I ever had the rear wheel off. Yeah, yeah, bad me.

Okay, since that spline looks to be the crappy gold variety, I strongly advise you to take it off the wheel and wash it in solvent and inspect. It's really hard to judge the spline condition with all that crap slathered all over it. Those splines rarely make it much beyond 20k miles so be careful or you will get stranded. During reassembly that Moly 60 grease is the stuff.

Interesting - what years were fitted with short-life splines?
Mine have both done lunar mileages with no wear (but lubed every time the tyre was changed).
