Valve Seals
Hey all, I just recently purchased a 82 GS650 G with 10,600 miles. The previous owner only put 2000 miles in 2 years. The original owner bought it for his wife to ride, so it has been babied most of its life. I have put close to 800 miles since the weather has straightened up in about 1 month. I notice after I'd been riding it for a couple of weeks it was smoking on start up after it had sat over night, or at work 4 hours or so between lunch and going home time. No biggie, smoked for about 30 sec. and would clear up and not smoke again until it sat overnight. OK, this past Saturday took it on it's first 120 mile round trip since my ownership. Nothing to fast, just a slow 45 to 55 mph putt on some paved county back roads. It sat for 48 hours after I shut it off from Saturdays ride. So today I start it up......no smoke, hmmmmm. Lunch time start it up......no smoke, hmmmmmmmmmm. Going home from work, start it up......no smoke, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Question is, can or do 32 year old valve seals rejuvinate themselves? Could it be the Rotella T conventional 15w-40 that I'm using has some mysterious "mechanic in a jug" fomula added to it? Thanks for replys.Tags: None

If it stopped just count your blessings. I chased the same issue for 10k, finally broke down and tore into it.

Yep, engines do come back to life after sitting for a while. Most likely not valve stem seals. Just rings reseating. My GS1000G did the same thing. Smoked for the first few starts and then... No smoke! Very common on good quality engines. Be glad it's Suzuki strong!http://img633.imageshack.us/img633/811/douMvs.jpg

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

Speaking of valves. Make sure you adjust them. With 10k miles is a good bet they have never been touched, so a couple will be tight.Ed

Sure make fun of the guy who refuses to ride in 6" of snow...( I flip the tailfeather in your virtual directions, for you do not deserve the entire bird.)
