    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Correct procedure for compression test

Just got myself a compression tester. Never used one before, i reckon i know just about enough to make a mistake and get an inaccurate reading.
Would anyone care to enlighten me on the correct procedure for our bikes with CV carbs please.
Your help is appreciated.
 
Get the bike close to operating temperature, if possible.

Remove all the spark plugs.

Install the tester in one of the plug holes.

Hold the throttle open, crank the engine.

After four or five compression cycles, the needle will stop climbing.

Use the same number of compression cycles for each test, for consistency.

If the numbers are all on the low side, add a teaspoon of oil to each cylinder, repeat the tests.
If the numbers all come up, it's the rings that are causing the low numbers.

If the numbers are still low, adjust the valves (which probably needs to be done, anyway).

Valves done 500km ago, but i have a head gasket leak so i am just doing some testing to see if the rings are good. I may just pull the barrels anyway, but want to see what ive got first.
 
When you pull the head, there is about a 99% chance that you have disturbed the seal on the base gasket, so you WILL be pulling the barrels to change it. :D

Are you sure it's the actual head gasket?

There are other leaks that mimic a head gasket leak.
 
Im pretty bloody sure, the engine has had a ****load of cleaning (not as good as some) and the oil appears directly from the gasket and pools below it on the fin in that 1 spot only, next to cylinder 1 about halfway between the spark plug and the front of the engine if memory serves.
Its a small leak, but its a leak.
