Tips on removing an engine alone

Getting ready to part out the 1980 GS1000GL Frankenstein and would like some tips on removing the engine without the help of an assistant. Any suggestions on how to do the reinstall into another bike would also be greatly appreciated.

    1980 GS1000GT (Daily rider with a 1983 1100G engine)
1998 Honda ST1100 (Daily long distance rider)
1982 GS850GLZ (Daily rider when the weather is crap)

Darn, with so many daily riders it's hard to decide which one to jump on next.;)

Chuck says. put bike on center kick stand, have a cart or table that is even with the bottom of bike, use a jack with a piece of plywood under engine. put pressure on engine unbolt engine slide engine over to table. Although I have not done this it seems pretty straight forward. I believe you'll have to remove the valve cover?. \

I did my 1150 many times by laying the bike on it's RHS, undoing the mounts and lifting the chassis off the motor.

Best to take as much off the chassis as possible, and loosening all the mounts before you lay it over. An old mattress is handy to lay the bike onto.

Same deal with re-installing the engine.
      Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

      Past:
      VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

Lifting the chassis off the engine works, but you need to lay the bike down on the side first.

+1 but opposite I pulled the motor, I used a couple ratchet straps and a beam in my garage... I pulled the engine, out and up, and then put my portable work bench under the engine and lowered it down after getting the chassis out of the way..

I just wrestled it out, it didn't look as heavy as it was.
