    82 gs 650l help

I picked up an 82 650l shaft drive a while back and just now getting around to riding it and have encountered a major problem. I replaced the air filter and pkugs (one at a time to keep from messing with fire sequence) and now (after around 500 miles) the bike fires right up and idle a fine. But when riding if the rpms reach 4500-5000 the bike starts breaking up and sputtering horribly and if you try to hold the Rpms it simple dies off....I beg for help I honestly have no clue what's wrong

As far as mods. The only thing that has been done is the exhaust. Stock pipes were removed and were replaced with aftermarket 4 into 2 pipe

I think there will be another "mod" or two in your future.

If you do it relatively soon, you can get by with re-jetting the carbs.

If you wait (a bit too long), you will have to replace some pistons and/or valves.

The thing that gets me is if the bike isn't under load it will turn 8500-9000 with ease

If it's not under load, you are not using the main jets.

No idea what pipes you have or how freely they flow, but going up 2-4 sizes on the main jets might be all you need.

My first guess would be that there's 32 years worth of neglected maintenance that hasn't been done.

Forgive me but it sounds as though you're running out of gas, either a plugged filter or petcock. Like a fuel flow issue.

Which, RWNielsen, is why Steve and Tom are recommending the full suite of maintenance be done starting with the carburetors.

Since it ran for 500 miles (and still starts and idles OK) check air filter element to make sure engine didn't swallow it.

Don't stop there. The rest of the bike is just as neglected.

You're going to. Need main jets.

Are you running a fuel filter? Is the diameter a lot smaller than the fuel line? If so, it could be choking out the bike. I'm only saying this because it happened to my 650 before.
