    1983 gs 650l driveshaft vibration

My gs 650l is developing a vibration in the rear end. It is smooth unless you get above about 45 or 50mph and let off of it going down a hill or coming to a stop and when you do that something vibrates like crazy. I appreciate any opinions and or advice on what my problem could be.

Don't ride this bike till you figure this out! Put bike on centerstand-in neutral, spin rear wheel back and forth; then in gear, spin wheel back and forth. Go to that link, peel driveshaft boot back and to inspect- the u-joint should be fine but that bolt might be loosening.
Have you or someone else had rear wheel off lately?

Peel back the boot at the u-joint. With the transmission in neutral, you can use the rear wheel to rotate the shaft and inspect the four bolts that hold the driveshaft to the flange in the previously-mentioned article.

Also be sure to inspect the integrity of the yoke "saddles". I had one of them break on a Kawasaki several years ago. When it was just starting to 'let go', I experienced the same symptoms that you did.

I haven't had the the wheel off lately. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I'll try to check the u joint in a few days when I get a chance.

Just a short thank you for asking this question AND to Steve for the answer! I was coming down from a ride yesterday and while doing some of my rare freeway driving, while decelerating from 65mph to about 50, a wicked vibration was causing me some concern... my first thought was tire! after inspection that was ok...so I continued home under 50. Looking this question up today...I peeled back the boot and saw on bolt laying on the boot...out completely and 2 more that were loose enough to spin with my fingers. YIKES!

I'd check the wheel bearings too.
