I haven't stretched any, but I dont see how it would hurt anything.

Hmmmm ....my 85 GS750 has developed a rattle to.Sounds like it comes from the left side.Changes slightly when I pull in the clutch but doesn't go away.Starts up just fine.Starter clutch or clutch hub?

If it changes when you squeeze the lever it is most likely the hub nut working loose. Starter clutch just spins at the same rate as the crank regardless if the lever is in or out...so the lever wouldnt have an effect on a starterclutch.

You'd think I'd hear it on the right side then, this defiantly sound like it's on the left side.Maybe the sound's coming though the pushrod?

Sound traveling down the crank..and sometimes it even sounds like its dead center of the crank. Do this... Take a screwdriver and put the handle into your ear and lay the shaft on the bike in different spots. Basically your making a poor mans engine stethascope.

It's the starter clutch, defiantly on the left and pulling the clutch in doesn't change it.

I have one of these for listening and pinpointing suspicious noises.

When I was told about the click pen spring I went around the house and looked for a bunch of clickers and just took them apart and found one that was the same length of the spring on the starter clutch then went and bout a pack of that same brand and style. I thought about stretching the one that didn't seem to be long enough but after stretching it and letting it sit over night I found that the shorter ones actually seemed to shrink back to their original size, so I nixed that idea. Also after reading my Clymer manual I did realize that the stator is in oil. I was thinking that the oil in there was bad, at least it was for the bike I was working on last year. Maybe I should read up on things before ordering parts, at least I will have an extra now....
