    New GS650E 1982 Owner

Hello to everybody from west coast of Canada!
I am a newbie rider who just picked up an above mentioned bike in very decent condition. But it seems that it needs a change of both sprockets and chain ( since tips of rear sprocket are like a crashing wave). But being really new to motorcycles I can't even find the size of the chain and sprockets that I need!!!! Not even in the manual or elsewhere, am I blind? Help me to choose the right one, and explain the difference if possible, do I have to put O-ting as manufacturer did or regular is OK? What size then?

Thanks to anybody who will be able to help with this silly dilemma...

Thanks for your respond, but sadly neither are in stock and also they don't really specify much about the part itself on that website!

Nice look-up, Sci, just the kind of response I knew would be forthcoming, wish I had the $$ and space to pick up an 'E'-

I've bought from that EBay seller in the past...I think it was mainly Honda stuff, but I had no complaints about what I picked up.

Sandrael...did you buy that one on Vancouver Craigslist? This one:

              '83 GS650G
'83 GS550es (didn't like the colours in the 80's, but they've grown on me)

Ah the 650E,one of the favorites of my past bikes. The shop manual is here and you should bookmark BassCliff's site.If it is the one with the square headlight I suggest looking for a round one.BTW you should have posted this in the GS owners section.

Thanks again for the info!!! Square is not the stock one I assume? Also would somebody be able to move the thread? Sorry for mistakenly posting in the wrong place.

The square light isn't stock and a round one looks better IMO.The give a better light pattern at night to.You definitely want at least an O ring chain,X rings are even better.

                        Check with this guy for your 650E parts. I have dibs on the backrest if it's the one I am looking for, but he says the headlight is still there;

Awesome thanks, might grab plastic side covers from him! Guys just a quick newb question.
Yesterday changed oil and the filter, start to leak from under the filter cap. Is it the rubber string thingy? Or filter not tight? Also if I were to open it now to check, would all of oil come out ?

                          Thanks

Welcome and enjoy your 650! I remember looking at one when they were new, but I was too cheap at the time and bought and XS-650 instead.
I wish I would have saved up for the GS, I would have had two extra cylinders, and shaft drive!

                            Oil filter leak:

Could be that it's not tight enough. (I have over tightened filters, before, and that can cause them to leak, too.)
If you accidentally, cross-threaded it, that would prevent a tight seal.

If you haven't done so already, just carefully try to tighten it a hair and see if that helps.
If motor was cold when you changed the oil, filters can seem tight then (I just hand tighten them) but can loosen a bit when the vehicle warms up.

You can always save the oil, if you end up draining some out. Just use a clean pan to drain it in. If the gasket is messed up, you might have to replace that, otherwise just make sure it is seated properly and retighten.

Not if it were an E like Sandrael has.

regarding oil leak. You may have stripped one of the posts that hold the filter on. But I'd start with being sure the rubber gasket is in place or not damaged. If that seems okay, then you need to check the posts. Do a search on this site for oil filter leak or something like that. It is COMMON. Those posts are small and it doesn't require a lot of torque to create a seal. Over tightening is easy to do and often the threads are stripped. Get a small wrench to fit and just lightly tighten.
