Cam sprockets

Something tells me these sprockets aren't stock. I bought this bike about 15 years ago from a rather interesting fellow on eBay. He had it for auction as an "L" model. I always thought it seemed kinda sporty for a big heavy bike. I just recently got it running again with a lot of help from this forum. Now I wonder what's under the head. I've had a few sporty bikes recently, the last being a BMW S1000RR, so I'm no stranger to fast bikes. I'm going to set the valves according to the book call it good. Just wish I had a dial indicator

Those are slotted cam sprockets. Used to degree the cams in to exact lobe center numbers

Cam Sprokets

They are slotted cam sprockets and they are looking like they are advanced. Without a degree wheel I would leave them alone unless you are going to take them out and put stock ones in there. There is about 65,000 clearance from the top of the piston to the valve and what you do with these slotted gears is get that number closer for more performance. In 1984 we took a stone stock 1150 took out the base gasket and put slotted cam sprockets and degreed the cams and just with those two things put the bike in the high 9 seconds but you are making the piston and the valve very close. Most GS1100 that were made in the US were 20% slower than ones from Canada because of emission bull and other stuff and it had to do with cams and clearance. I have built a lot of these motors and can get them very quick for little money. Bottom line if it runs fine leave it alone. Throw out the stock settings it already was changed.
We held records with a 1982 1100 1135 motor 12 1/2 compression cam head work 9:17 1/4 mile with bars

ALL stock? Carbs, pipes, airbox, no slick, no wheelie bar, everything stock except the cams degreed & no base gasket? With a 50 pound rider maybe!! please embellish more!

Yes both Ray and I would like to know. How you get Stock GS1150 to run in the high 9's. Completely stock chassis?
I would appreciate any knowledge you are willing to pass along.
I would love to get my 84 GSX1100 into the high 9's

I got a 82 Katana 1000 no bar chassis to go a 9.87 with a stock motor parts street ported head cams degreed in and an old V/H sidewinder pipe and 36mm RS Mukunis. It was the first head I ever ported myself. But it took a 68" no bar chassis with a slick to get it to do that. And I had a lighter rider than I riding it I could only get 10.00's with it getting 1.45 sixtyfooters.

Are there any markings at the ends of the cams they could be aftermarket cams also

Playing with fire pulling the base gasket on a GS1100 or GS1150. I know of a few guys that smacked the head with the piston trying that without taking proper measurements for piston to head clearance.

Byron Hines couldn't put one in the 9s with JUST cam degreeing & base gasket removal. Not even with a 50 pound rider!!! I wish people would at least get their BSing CLOSE to believable!!

No Ray, I didn't know where to look. I didn't see any marking on the body of the cams. I should have mentioned that I have pods, a pipe and 36's on the bike when I said it seemed sporty.

Cam Motion cams will be stamped on the end of the cams by the notches. Web Cams or Vance & Hines cams (made by Web) will have the #s on the flat area around where the center hole of the cam sprockets bolt. Wasn't referring to you as the BSer Nielsen.

Now now Ray I think a 50 lbs rider could possibly get one into the 9's if he could pull off some 1.25 sixtyfooters. But that would have to be suited up weight so your rider would need to be 35 lbs

No worries Ray
I was just trying to answer an earlier question. I'll have the cover off this week to re-torque the head and helicoil a boo-boo. I'll take a closer look at the cams then.
