I need this like a belt in the, oh, never mind

Was running errands, sound from down low like a sidestand not fully up, was up, do the last errand, and the sound gets more apparent. A hundred yards up the road, clearly there is lessening drive to the rear wheel, and then no drive to the rear wheel. The 'graunching' sound doesn't get any louder, nor does it sound really 'gnashy' and horrible, but obviously not right, and obviously involves the lack of drive. Sounds like gear teeth not meshing very well, and then not at all. Also sounds like it's coming from the output shaft bevel gear area, tending to represent a 'visual' of the bevel gears not meshing with the prop shaft bevel gear. Among the possibilities, could it be as simple as a loosened nut in the area, or a clutch hub nut (long shot) not holding, never mind, service manual tells me no dice, wrong shaft.

Ok- any of you good folks have a similar experience, and could guide me in some direction so that I know what I'm in store for? Hopefully I've provided enough info that might relate to somebody's previous experience, anyway.

Now I've got to push the %^%$&&*er home a mile or so to get it on to my awesome HF bike lift, and start further investigation. And it's not downhill,
EITHER!! If you don't hear back, I've croaked!! . No truck, either!!

    ('82 650G, sorry)

I feel for ya. I once had to push my 1150E about a mile and a half. It kept getting heavier and heavier. LOL

I snapped a clutch cable on my way to work last year, going downhill at a 6% grade.....in july. Stopped at the local fueling stop and called my boss to tell him I would be late.

Any other time, the 550 would be nice and easy, but the sun was right in my face and heating me up pretty good. Up the grade I went. A mile and a half later, took about an hour or so. Now I replace cables the day I get a new bike.

That was just one of many times pushing for me. Including pushing my 750 with a locked up front brake almost a half mile.

I'm getting too old for this crap.

I have no such experience, but I have read about it a few times. I bet you haven't greased the splines when you had the rear wheel off to change the tire in quite a while, have you?

Actually, about a year ago when I had some BT 45's installed, used the Moly 60, should be good, the sounds I described seem to come more from the front bevel gear/countershaft area, but you never know. Just got back from pushing it, had a little help going up the 'hill' near my place from a neighbor. Slow the heart rate down a bit, and up on my new! HF bike lift, and start exploring. Sure glad I got that thing!

A busted clutch cable shouldn't stop you riding, start in first on the starter and away you go, when you up/down shift drop revs right off and a firm gearshift and you away, when you must stop at lights, whatever, down shift to first and pull on the brakes till the motor stalls, no damage all spiffy. What could be simpler?

Don't say can't, as anything is possible with time and effort, but, if you don't have time things get tougher and require more effort.

+3 on the splines in the rear wheel. Had the wife on the back of my 650G and thought it'd be funny to gun it in first....sheered all the teeth clean off.

You guys are talking about the hub splines, right, not the rear splines on the driveshaft, as has been suggested?

That's what I'm talking about, sounds like bwringer is too. Pretty easy to fix once I figured it out. I know there are a few years/colors of splines that were weaker than the rest, just can't remember which ones those were.

I recall a lot of threads/posts concerning 'black' and 'silver' hub splines, but, IIRC, was all about 850's/1000G's, don't recall any references to 650's in the same context-
