1978 GS1000E Transmission - What to inpect while engine is on a stand?

    Folks,

I have the engine out of my 1978 GS1000E and soon it will be receiving a big bore kit and some head work.

While the engine is on a stand, is there anything I can inspect in the transmission with the oil pan removed that I should look out for?

I never rode the bike, so I don't know if it had any shifting issues. The oil was clear (no metal debris) when I drained it.

Also, when I had the engine running in the frame, I briefly shifted up/down through the gears and didn't hear any grinding, etc - granted, the drivetrain was not under load.

    Your advice is appreciated!

If you have it open anyway, just inspect everything you can. I often hear of people cleaning the oil sump screen (or whatever it's called). Upside down, all of the gears of the transmission are exposed so they're easy to see and operate. The service manual has procedures for checking various sizes, runouts, and clearances if you want to get into that level of detail.
