Quest, just to get it out of the way, when were your valves checked last? If they are tight, the engine will struggle to run, especially when it gets hot.
And +1 to checking the coils. I don't think it relates directly to your issue, but I had a 40 year old Honda that would run great for 30 minutes at a time. Once the coils heated up, they would crap out until they cooled down.

Clean the carbs properly, check the valves, do all the basic maintenance or you'll be hurting. With that said, what's battery voltage with the key off? on? when trying to start?Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

I myself have never ever had to dip carbs to clean them.Last edited by stetracer; 07-26-2014, 01:03 PM.My stable

How many of the other posts mentioned his carbs as well? He said he sprayed them out and they look clean inside. He really didn't fix anything. Don't forget this is 30+ year old bike and some other issues may be involved in this as well.sigpicMrBill Been a GSR member on and off since April 2002

If he just cleaned the carbs and did not install a fuel filter he could have sucked some dirt in the pilot jet and that would cause it not to start but not just shut down while riding and not start back up after sitting for a whileLast edited by stetracer; 07-26-2014, 01:13 PM.My stable

I guess we need more info also we have asked a few questions but he has yet to answer them. Rpm it dies at? How he jumped it? What is his battery voltage? Are a few. I assumed he checked all the electric connection after you said something. A lot of bikes will not run right with a bad battery even after it is jump started and if he jump started it with a running car I sure he cooked somethingMy stable

An old locally famous mechanic once told me that 90% of all carb problems were electrical. In other words, get the juice in order before you touch anything else. I understand that it's fine to go thru the carbs and a valve adjustment when resurrecting old stuff, but it's still all for naught if the fire is not reliable. I have purchased good stuff that the PO thought was shot because the electrics were screwed.

Quest
I jumped iy with a car what could be fried? How do i check?
Yes i did i did not take the carbs completely apart to clean them. But I didnt clean them because i thought that was the problem, i just cleaned them because i had them out while rejetting. Im almost positive the problem why its not srarting isnt the carbs because it ran perfect then just dies as if a plug was pulled or someone flipped the off switch. I dont know much about motors but if it was a carb problem it wouldnt ryn perfect then just die.
The bike would suddenly just die after running good. No putting or hesitation just die. Or it wouldnt start after running for a while. If i came back to it after a few hours it would start back up and be fine. It only happend a few times but got more often.
I bought a RR and it seemed to fix the problem. I rejetted it and had it running smooth as butter, road it for a few days and then it wouldnt start after a short trip to lowes. It finally started and i road it home. It Ran fine for a couple days then wouldnt start again. Next day started so I took it to the car wash. i tried to to leave and it had trouble starting. i waited a while then it started up but when i went to take of it just died and i had to push it home. It seemed to rev fine before it died but though.Last edited by Guest; 07-28-2014, 11:38 AM.

Sounds like you might have fried your R/R. Did you have the car on when you jumped it? The extra voltage from the car battery will get shunted by the R/R to ground and you could have overloaded the zener diode in the R/R and fried it causing your battery to no longer charge.
