    Oil consumption for 78 GS1000

    Hello all

What is considered "acceptable" and typical oil consumption for a 78 GS1000?
When I start the bike cold I do see blue smoke coming out of the exhaust and when I bump the throttle.
I have yet to take the bike out on an extended trip and am wondering how often I should check the oil level and the best way to do it.

    Thanks for all the help

    Geo.

You've been here for four years and still don't have your factory service manual? http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/

Biggest culprit of blue smoke is bad valve stem seals (requires removing the head, I believe) followed by worn piston rings and/or cylinders.

      Practically none at all.
On the center-stand before each ride after you lube the chain and check the tire pressures.

Very good advice. Carry a litre of your favorite oil with you.
