    550 vs 750

Is it possible to use the ignition from an 81 GS750E on a 78 550E?

Ignitor, coils, signal generator. Do I need the stator from the 750? Or any other parts?

Stator? Humm... You realize, of course, that the stator is part of the charging system right?

I'm going to go with "doubtful." The '81 750E has an electronic ignition while the '78 550E almost certainly didn't. Physically, the engines are quire different.

you can wire the coils/ignitor/signal gen up on the bench and spin the rotor between the pick ups and make the plugs fire without it even being mounted.
i have did a few of these conversions but your 8 valve engine will want more timing than the 16 valve.
i don't remember if just changing the advancer took care of this or if i had to slot the signal gen plates slots.

Yes, they are very different, but while I was filing the 550 points, I checked the signal gen from the 750 and it is the same size.

Is there a certain advancer that would do this? I'm tired of playing with the points for now.

yes the points advancer in your bike.
you will have to grind the end off(750 rotor) a certain amount so that when installed it will advance and not bind.
remember you have to install the 750 rotor on your 550 advancer..there is a length difference.

Got it all worked out. Had to grind the end of the rotor bolt where the edge is raised a bit to clear the cover. I just got the carbs back together thanks to Z1, and did a test run around the block. Synced the carbs late and had a (few) beer(s), so the full test run with a few plug chops to check my jetting will be done after work today.
