When preforming a proper compression test on your model bike with C/V carbs you must remove the carbs to do the test correctly. Never run a motor when preforming a compression test. And the valves must be adjusted properly to preform an accurate compression test. Do you have a repair manual for your bike.

I guess some people do; I suspect they know more about what they are doing than other practitioners.
Normal Running Compression Most people have heard of a compression test. A compression test can give a service technician ...
Perhaps the OP will enlighten us after he has completed his diagnosis? (note questions end in a ?)

Well, I hadn't adjusted the valves on this bike yet and of course that could affect compression so I did it today. Afterwards I checked the compression.
Oddest part is, #2 did not need adjustment and it was the one that was so low. Oh well, I'm going to appreciate the blessing and move on.
Oh and one more thing--gluing the valve cover gasket is a mean thing to do to the next guy who opens it up.sigpic

Just a quick story. Bought a 1327 16 valve from a good friend. Bike had sat for 5 years. The problem was having several valve springs in the compressed stage. He told me they would have to be replaced.I rode it for a week with a decent amount of smoke but it cleared up.Eventually I replaced the springs. Sometimes the best thing is to set all clearances and go for a ride...

Curt
That seems to be the best strategy for smoke unless you know it is something else.

I am having the same issues with my ES. #4 compression was almost non-existent this morning but I have Sea Foam in both the oil and fuel and let it idle for 15 min and took it for a short ride. It seemed to run really well so I let the clutch out at a stop sign and rolled on the gas pretty hard and the rear tire broke loose and slid to the right a few inches as I took off. Better than coffee for opening the eyes in the morning. #4 tested at 120 after it cooled down some. This is pretty weird stuff to me. They both sat for a while before I got them in July. Maybe the Sea Foam is doing it's job.sigpic

UPDATE. Good News!...and of course another question. I finally got the ES out for a ride where I could push it a bit. When I got back the compression was up to 150. What fun! However I did hear some significant detonation if I went to full throttle. So any direction there would be appreciated.sigpic
