    84 GS750ES with a bent shift fork on 2nd

Hello, I am new to this forum and this is my first post so please excuse me if I get anything wrong.

After years of riding CBs I decided it was time for a change and bought an 84 GS750ES for $300, unfortunately it appears to have a bent shift fork on 2nd gear. I am not very very experienced with working on engines and have no garage so I visited my mechanic today and he quoted me $1200 to $1500 for the repair. I am wondering if anyone has worked with this issue in the past and what the job entails? Mainly I am just hoping someone will tell me I can fix this without having to pull the engine.

    what are your symptoms?
    jumps out of gear?
    no 2nd at all?
have to force the shifter to make a shift?
    bent fork(s)/rounded dogs ect...
the engine has to come out and split the cases...no top end removal just the bottom case.
the price seems VERY high..just depends on the money spent on parts and if there is any machine work for back cutting or dog/slot weld ups.

The bike shifts just fine, it even runs ok in second gear, but if you give it more than just a little throttle in second it kicks back to neutral.

not a bent fork per say then.
        rounded dogs/slots.
        worn drum pattern.
it all could have started with a bent fork but if your guys says it's a bent fork you need to find a new guy.
        just my professional opinion.

Probably rounded dogs and a bent shifter fork. And yes it has to come out and apart. Not that hard really. Remove exhaust, carbs, necessary wiring, unbolt mounts and lift it out. Then flip it upside down and remove the bottom case and you're there. I think what usually happens is the shifter dogs get worn from abuse and then starts popping out of gear under power bending the shifter fork. Suppose it could also happen other way around but either way you're probably look at dogs and forks. Only way to tell is to tear it down.

Ok, sounds like I might be able to pull it off on my own. Any idea what I am looking at in parts?

Thanks Trevor, I was a member of the Cafe Racer Ontario forum but sadly it wasn't very popular. I was shocked to see how quickly I got responses to my question. Hopefully my attempt won't just make a broken bike worse. I took the tank and side covers off to have a look at what I am dealing with to remove the engine but I honestly have no idea where to start with undoing wiring. I am just going to keep my fingers crosses and hope for good advice from this forum.

                  No sweat Patrick,
I'm sure you will have more responses tomorrow. Now where are those pics??

Patrick. I had the exact same problem with my 1982 GS650GL. Bought it for $300 knowing that it wouldn't stay in 2nd gear when any throttle was applied. The PO didn't want to take the time/money to fix it.
I took it home, and started taking it apart following the instructions in the service manual located on BassCliff's site. http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/

I'm probably out $300 on tools and gaskets, But I'm finally at the point where I've got my new (to me) transmission and shift forks and I'll be putting the engine back together this week. I've been documenting my progress with lots of pics here, if you want to see what the process entails.

                    Good luck

have it back cut and replace any forks/drum/shift fork shafts when in doubt.
a 650 makes about half the HP of your 750.
