    Clutch slipping above 6k rpm on full throttle. is oem the absolute best replacement?

    The last couple of times that I have been out on my GK, I've noticed that as I go through the gears full throttle, about half way through 3rd gear, I get a slippage. So, it's probably time to to replace the plates.

    What's the collective opinion here on what are the best plates to get?

    I'm just adding a clutch change out to my winter maintenance list, along with adj vlv's, synch carbs, change to 17" rear wheel, install salty monk brake upgrd (finally) w/stainlees lines, etc.

    FYI: I've been using Shell 20w40 diesel DelVac oil.

      Before you go after the plates, buy a set of Emgo or Parts Unlimited clutch springs (they don't cost much at all), and swap out three of them with the springs currently in there (leaving three of the original ones in) and try that. They are quite stiff, and most of the time just doing that will take care of slippage.

        good advice on the springs, but I'm not sure I want to have a stiffer clutch lever.

          Personally, I have no problems with the stock springs. A set of six will cost about $20, the gasket is about $10.

          For a total of about $30, you will have a well-grabbing clutch with a relatively light feel at the lever.

            Agree with replacing the springs with stock and trying again. Worst case, order new OEM plates if it still slips.

              thanks guys! No mater what, I need to replace the 30+yr old springs! & the only risk is that I could need a second clutch cover gasket, NBD!

                When you do the job, leave the bike on the side stand, there will be no need to drain the oil.

                    Deglaze the steels with 00 steel wool and WD 40.
                    1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
                    1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.
