New bars and need shorter cables. Where to find them?
I installed a set of drag bars (keeping the originals in case I want to return to stock someday) but now the cables are much too long. Anyone know what cables would fit the 650E but are about 4-6" shorter? Even a couple inches shorter would help some. Or can I modify my existing cables?Tags: None

You could try the GS1000S cables...I don't have an order list in front of me, but I believe that is what I ended up using with the Euro bars on my G, at least for the throttle. It was a bit short, but not outside of what the adjustment can handle. You could also consider using 650M cables, which I think is what I used for the choke and clutch. For your E, the choke knob is centre-mounted, right? If so, you won't need to replace that.
EDIT- the 1000S would have had a push/pull throttle. Somewhere in the forum I once read a recommendation on using the 1000S cable, though...I'll have to check my parts listLast edited by BigD_83; 12-02-2014, 03:24 PM.'83 GS650G

Looks like the throttle cable will work, but no such luck with the clutch cable. Anyone else know of a shorter clutch cable?

Agree about using cables for a GS bike that has low bars. 650M cables are the obvious choice, but there are others like 550M or 1000S.Ed

hello mate; if you go online and look for 'custom' motorcycle supplies you will find a plethora of companies willing to supply you with any component you'll ever need to make your own; if you should feel a little 'ill at ease' doing it yourself then your local motorcycle garage 'SHOULD' be able to do it for you, without any problems whatsoever; or at least know some-one or shop that can; peruse around youtube; it really is easy;

OEM cables are superior to aftermarket in most cases. At least they are here in the US.Ed

hello there my mate; he wouldn't have to doctor his original cables in the least; every component is readily available; although it has to be said that a new cable that fits is so much easier and quicker; Robbie

I have no problem getting my hands dirty and making my own cables. Thanks for the link BigD, I already have a spare throttle cable I can use to get started. Thanks for all the help guys. I'm keeping all of the stock parts for this bike because I know someday either myself or someone that loves these old GS's will want it just the way it was intended to look. Alas, I am young and prefer a more aggressive riding position for highway commuting... plus the chicks dig it

The mini-Kat 650M came with a lower profile handlebar.

So a clutch cable from a 650M is the way to go? I recently switched to an almost straight bar on my '82 650G and although the stock cable is working, I feel a shorter cable would be better. Thanks!
