Suzukikarl, does your GS still have points ignition? The reason I ask is that I had a very metallic rattle on my '79 GS850 at idle. Bike ran great except for the rattle at idle. After checking all the things already mention I checked my ignition timing with a timing light. There was a noticeable difference between timing for 1-4 and 2-3 so I shifted the movable points plate so the timing was the same. Rattle goneComment
