    Cam Chain 20 Pin Length

When measuring the 20 pin length of the cam chain do you measure from "center of pin" to "center of pin". I realize you actually go from 1 pin to the 21st pin.

Also, due to limitations of my cheapo digital caliper, I measured 16 lengths and converted the limit from 6.213" to 4.970" which is 80% of 6.213. Does that sound reasonable?

I find working on my motorcycle mildly therapeutic when I'm not cursing.

You go from pin 1 to pin 20. Center to center, yes. Your conversion sounds good.
Look at the pic in the Suzuki manual, it's pretty clear.

I was thinking a "pitch" is the distance from one pin to the next pin and therefore 20 pitches would be the distance from pin 1 to pin 21?? Like at pin 2 you would have only traveled 1 pitch. I think the manual refers to 20 pitches. http://www.sprocketsunlimited.com/Ch...fications.html

I think it's page 9-23 in the service manual.

It's not 20 pitches, its 20 pins, so 19 pitches. Anyway the picture in the Suzuki manual is clear.

The explanation and pic on page 3-35 of the Suzuki GS 1100G manual seems to say otherwise but maybe I'm confused. Or page 78 if you don't go by section designations

Yep, the picture in the Suzuki manual is very clear.

However, it shows 20 PITCHES when you measure for chain length.

If you are setting cam timing, you measure 20 PINS, which is only 19 pitches.
