    1980 GS1000G Engine R/R Question.

    Doing a frame off restoration and the motor is ready to go back in. Getting it out by myself was a bummer. My question is.....is it easier to put back in through the left side or the right side? Or does it matter? I took it out through the right and really nicked up the frame on the way out. After powder coating the frame I don't want to have the same thing happen going back in. Breather cover is removed. I'm going to wrap the frame tubes with carpet to try to eliminate any powder coating removal on the way in. Floor jack is being used. Any personal techniques or tips will be greatly appreciated.

    PVC tubing split lengthwise is very useful for protecting the frame and it is not nearly as thick as carpet or other cushioning material.

      Not personally, but I have seen youtube where they have put the motor on its side, blocked up, and then put the empty frame on the motor.

        I usually go from the left side in. You can get it part way in and rest it on the frame, then position yourself better to get it all the way thru. Good idea of using carpet, that should protect things. Have a good look at all you motor mount brackets and make sure none are still mounted to the bike as they will get in the way while putting it back in. Once the engine is in the frame you will need to rest it on the bottom of the frame, then use your jack to raise it up. If you can find someone to give you a hand it will sure make this job easier. The suggestion of dropping the frame over the motor is a good one, but it sounds like you have the bike somewhat put back together already. Make sure you take a few pics and post them up, sounds like a good restoration.

          2015 CAN AM RTS


          Stuff I've done to my bike:dancing: 1100E front end with new Sonic springs, 1100E swing arm conversion with new Progressive shocks installed, 530 sprockets/chain conversion, new SS brake lines, new brake pads. New SS fasteners through out. Rebuilt carbs, new EBC clutch springs and horn installed. New paint. Motor runs strong.

            Removal/Replacement.

            Small bubble wrap and tape does a nice job of protecting the frame.
